About 35 kilometres east of Unawatuna, Mirissa is roughly forty-five minutes away by car. From November to April its harbour is the departure point for whale- and dolphin-watching boats that head out in search of blue whales — the largest animals on earth — as well as sperm whales and spinner dolphins. The catch is the early start: boats leave around dawn, so a reliable pre-dawn transfer makes all the difference.
