Around 25 kilometres away, Weligama is about thirty-five minutes from Unawatuna along the coast road. Its broad, shallow bay is where most visitors to Sri Lanka take their first surf lesson — the whitewater is forgiving, the boards are plentiful, and instructors are used to complete beginners. Just offshore, the tiny island of Taprobane and the famous stilt fishermen make for classic south-coast photos.
This is an easy, popular route for a morning surf, a beach day, or a lunch stop, and it slots neatly onto the way to or from Mirissa.
